The City of Spokane and Spokane Police Department provide access to GIS and map information via the Internet through its interactive mapping tools.  Using a web browser, you can view a variety of geographic and related tabular information for various locations throughout the City.

A GIS (Geographic Information System) is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information ( i.e. data identified according to their locations).  Simply put, a GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place.

The layers of information you combine depends on your purpose.  Some common examples used in law enforcement include: vehicle theft, prowling and robbery.  Aggregating crimes over time relevant to their spatial location gives law enforcement the ability to detect patterns and similarities much faster than sifting through piles of tabular reports.

Please note, you must have Internet Explorer 5.5 or Netscape 7.0 or higher to use online mapping tools. The mapping application is best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768.
