On 12/31/12 at about 10:09 pm a citizen called 911 reporting that people had been shot at the Neighborhood Grocery store at 3400 E. Euclid, and that a single suspect had fled from the store. Spokane Police Department officers arrived on scene less than a minute after being dispatched. They found one male deceased, and another suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Officers found a crashed vehicle a short distance away at Thor and Carlisle. A Sheriff’s Office police helicopter subsequently spotted the suspect hiding along the river under the Greene Street Bridge. The suspect was taken into custody by officers directed to his location by the helicopter. The injured person from the store was transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition and getting treatment for his injuries.
Spokane Police Department Major Crimes detectives responded and the investigation is continuing.
The suspect was booked into jail for Second Degree Murder and First Degree Assault.
Arrested: Shannon L. Johnson 33 years old
The quick capture of the suspect was aided due to extra law enforcement resources working on New Year’s Eve. These resources included the Sheriff’s Officer police helicopter, K9 officers, SWAT personnel, and GET (Gang Enforcement Team) officers. They were able to immediately respond as resources to contain the area and to locate the suspect.
The Spokane Police Department is requesting that any witnesses to the incident or anyone with information about the incident contact Crime Check at 456-2233.
