Spokane Police Department detectives continue working on the shooting investigation that left two Spokane County Deputies hospitalized. Deputy Spink was released late last week but Deputy Northway remains in the hospital.
Around 4:15pm on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, Deputy Spink and Deputy Northway conducted a traffic stop near Elm and Newport Hwy. Charlie Wallace, a passenger in the SUV being stopped, jumped out and began firing upon the deputies. Within 45 minutes of the initial shooting, SPD Detective Tim Madsen located Wallace driving a stolen Honda Accord. Wallace aimed his handgun out the window and shot at Det. Madsen. Det. Madsen was not injured.
The pursuit continued north on Highway towards Deer Park. SCSO Deputy Dan Dutton attempted to stop Wallace in the intersection of Hwy 2 and Deer Park-Milan Road. Deputy Dutton struck Wallace’s vehicle, causing the car to slow slightly before speeding west on Deer Park – Milan Road. As Wallace approached Deer Park, SCSO Detective Shane McClary fired several rounds from his service weapon at Wallace. Wallace continued west towards SR 395, where he crashed into SPD Ofc. Ryan Snider’s patrol car and then a guardrail. As officers approached the vehicle, they observed Wallace attempting to get out of the car. Within seconds, Wallace shot himself with a handgun, committing suicide.
